How much would the servers cost for my app or platform?

We are often asked by founders about how much are their app’s or platforms server costs going to be and how much should they budget. Below are some high-level average costs that we’ve noticed from our work on building and supporting these platforms over the years.  Hope these help! Feel free to reach out if you need more info.

Server Costs for Blogs

If you have a standard blog, it is recommended to use a hosted service instead of trying to host it yourself. A hosted service by companies like WordPress.comDigital OceanDreamhost, or WPEngine would standardize costs especially if the traffic you receive is somewhat predictable.

These hosting plans cost anywhere between $5 to $250/mo for up to 400k visitors per month

Server Costs for Marketplaces and eCommerce

These are web and/or mobile apps with straightforward functionalities such as eCommerce, publications etc where content is primarily created by the creators of the app instead of the end-users. These platforms would have more manageable and predictable costs. These would be:

  • Up to 1,000 users: between $60-200/mo
  • Up to 10,000 users: up to $500-700/mo
  • Up to 25,000 users: up to $1,000-1,300/mo
  • Up to 50,000 users: up to $1,700-2,300/mo
  • Up to 100,000 users: up to $2,000-3,000/mo

Server Costs for Marketplaces and eCommerce

These are applications such as Youtube, Instagram etc where users can generate and share content, tend to rake up higher server costs than traditional applications. These would be as follows:

  • Up to 1,000 users: between $100-$250/mo
  • Up to 10,000 users: up to $800-$900/mo
  • Up to 25,000 users: up to $1,300-$1,600/mo
  • Up to 50,000 users: up to $2,300-$3,000/mo
  • Up to 100,000 users: up to $4,000-$5,000/mo
